But if you believe in the bible or in the God of the bible, reading the Book of Psalms will be an eye opener for you or to any church or non-church goer.
If you haven't read any of the 150 psalms in the Old Testament Bible, then let us read one right now:
Psalm 150
Praise the LORD.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
praise him with tambourine and dancing,
praise him with the strings and flute,
praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD.
If you just browsed through it, it would be good to reread it again, this time more slowly and then come back here...
Many of the psalms are being attributed to David of the David and Goliath fame.
But some of the psalms have no attribution, meaning nobody knows who really wrote them or even exactly when they are actually written. But it would be safe to say that these psalms have been written hundreds and hundreds and hundred of years ago and so going back to as far back as David's time (or some more than 3,000 years ago), songs of praise, or singing and even dancing and all kinds of musical instruments have been used to praise God.
Today, we have no problem singing or dancing or praising or playing music for people we love or admire or even people we don't even know. But when we do the same things to God, it seems wrong, awkward even stupid.
But just a casual reading of many of the other psalms, the same theme as we read here in Psalm 150 would be apparent.
So the next time, you wish to "talk" to God, you may want to try singing, or dancing and or playing all kinds of instruments or better yet do all these things to do so.
Come to think of it, singing, dancing and playing beautiful music most probably was originally intended to be lavished upon God, the God who made us and everything around us.
If you believe in God, then all these would seem logical to you.
So if you believe God is real, then it is normal for everything that has breath to actually praise Him!
Now, if you do not believe in a Creator God, then continue to sing, dance and play beautiful music to whoever or whatever you wish. No one should stop you.
But then again any real deal God believer should be able to do the same to his Creator.
Can I say amen?
