Me And My Big Mouth
'While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!"' Matthew 17:5
This is the verse after the transfiguration of Jesus, which was witnessed by three people, Peter, James and John -- the Big Three. [This event is also recorded in the books of Mark, Luke and in second Peter].
Again every time I read about the adventures of Peter, it never fails to amaze me, for it seems like whatever he does, he always manages to get his foot stuck in his mouth.
But you see, I can't blame him, if we will reread Matthew 17:1-8, it will show that he and the brothers James and John have again just witnessed another glorious event -- this one we call the Transfiguration of Christ.
In verse 5, above it says while Peter was "still speaking" a cloud enveloped them (could be a cue to quit yapping) and then a voice (definite cue) which told them to "Listen to Him".
Well, it is kind of hard to "listen" while we are talking. This goes the same with our prayer time, when we do all the talking, we are effectively limiting our conversation with our Heavenly Father into a one-way CB-communication style link.
Today, the Lord is gently reminding us to "listen" to Him. And it's not going to be hard, because He will show us the miraculous, He will show us the impossible and He will let us experience Him first hand -- like He has done to Peter, James and John.
I have learned early in my Christian walk, that the Lord speaks to us every moment, the thing is we are busy with many things or we might be like Peter who thinks he always need to say something, anything and thus we cannot effectively "hear him" -- Mary and Martha is a good example, Luke 10:38-42.
Here's a tip from my early days of being a baby Christian, whenever something happens to me, big or small, good or bad, planned or totally unexpected, routine or rather strange -- I pause and ponder, and keeping quiet, I inwardly ask the Holy Spirit, "Lord, what are you trying to tell me?"
If I have read the Word that morning or listened to a teaching or a worship CD or sang songs of praise and worship to Him or just thought about His goodness, the Holy Spirit will normally and almost immediately give me some insight or a new revelation regarding the situation I was in. And like Jesus had intended for Peter, James and John, it grew my faith moment by moment and allowed the Holy Spirit to work in me and through me. [Again Ephesians 2:8, not by me or my works]
So I encourage you, in the midst of your difficulties or in any situation, ask the Lord to give you time to read about Jesus, and find the precious stones and the precious metals carefully hidden within His Word and more importantly in the things that are happening in the daily grind, we call life.
