He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
I have always found it amusing that most people's idea of heaven is this solemn or really boring place where everyone is hanging around in clouds, playing harps and singing hymns. Really?
I don't get that. I didn't even know that God sings before I read that passage in the book of Zephaniah above. But how it blew me away when I did. God sings! And more so He rejoices over you, the apple of His eyes, as He sings to you. Yes, you.
Now I've never even remembered reading anywhere in the bible where it is mentioned that Jesus sings. Do you?
Well, I searched the internet for that and whoa, He did... in one short mention after they ate the last supper and before they left for Gethsemane... Jesus sings.
'After they sang a hymn, they went to the Mount of Olives.' Mark 14:26 (also recorded in Matthew 26:30). But that was it.
But it is important to note that during this one time that it was mentioned that Jesus sang, it was during the time when He was about to face His fateful death (although it wouldn't be a stretch to say that they did sing in multiple other times before that and also because it is recorded that the disciples of Jesus sang in many instances after Jesus ascended into heaven).
Now, it dawned on me that one reason God loved David so much -- the same David who committed adultery, murder and other sins -- was that because he worshipped Him with songs. David pretty much wrote half the psalms in the bible.
Jesus said, he only does what he sees his Father is doing. Indeed as the Son, He saw His Father rejoicing with songs -- yes the same as David.
So the next time you feel like not singing to the Lord or if you are tempted not to sing in church, remember David sang. The disciples of Jesus sang. Jesus sings. God Himself sings. And He rejoices and sings for you.
'This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.' Psalm 118:24
